Icelandics prefer to get as high up and out of the way as possible. If in a barn they will find the highest rafters, if left outdoors they will congregate as high up and as far out in the branches as is possible, thus avoiding predators. They tend to congregate among those of similar age if different ages are represented in a flock. When the young first get out of the nest it is amazing to find them up on a roost with mother hen. They may be under her, next to her and at times on top of her.
