Icelandics are oft used to apple baskets according to some sources. I have personally had my Icelandics nest in wood and metal boxes, both as high up as five feet and as low as ground level. At time I have read of Icelandics laying eggs almost anywhere including out on the floor, in the grass in low nests, and just outside of "well placed nesting boxes." I don't currently draw any special conclusions about Icelandics nesting needs. If anything I would say they are opportunistic and will make due with what they have.

I agree. I have one hen who no matter how many boxes are available, she prefers to scrape out a depression in the pen and lay her eggs there. Needless to say, I may some day get an aware for 'dirtiest Icelandic egg' owner.... ugh
